Treoir welcomes commitment to deal with poverty in budget 2020
5 July 2019
Treoir, the National Federation of Services for Unmarried Parents and their Children has given a guarded welcome to a commitment to address child poverty in budget 2020.
Speaking after the Pre-Budget 2020 Forum at Dublin Castle, Treoir’s CEO Damien Peelo said:
“I very much welcome the Minister for Social Protection, Regina Doherty ‘s emphasis on eradicating poverty, particularly in relation to lone parents and their children.
Treoir like other organisations is very concerned by the reduction of income for lone parents and by the growing prevalence of child poverty. Considering this, we welcome the Minister’s commitment to address issues to do with the One Family Payment and the reduction of income for lone parent in employment.
We are also pleased with Minister Doherty’s comments to the Forum acknowledging problems with the National Childcare Scheme. As these relate specifically to lone parents on low incomes, we note that the Minister has raised these issues with Minister Zappone, and her assurance they will be ironed out.
