Plan Ahead for Shared Parenting This Christmas

6th December 2024

With Christmas around the corner, Treoir, the National Information Service for parents who are not married to each other and their children, is urging parents who share parenting responsibilities to plan early and communicate effectively to ensure a happy and enjoyable Christmas for their family.

Geraldine O’Driscoll, Shared Parenting Liaison Officer at Treoir, emphasizes the importance of early planning: “Agreeing Christmas holiday arrangements can be stressful, but starting the conversation early helps avoid conflict and ensures a smoother experience for everyone.”

For Christmas planning, Treoir encourages parents to focus on their children’s needs, placing their happiness and well-being at the forefront. Additionally, involving children in discussions, where appropriate, and sharing the holiday plans early, can reduce anxiety, help them feel secure and get everyone excited about the upcoming festivities.

Treoir recognises that trying to plan shared parenting arrangements can be difficult, particularly during the Christmas period, but there are supports out there that can help you.

Fiona McAuslan, Director of Family Mediation Service at the Legal Aid Board, speaks on the importance of planning ahead for your children this Christmas, and how the Family Mediation Service can help:

“What we have found in our Family Mediation Service is that it is not the divorce, separation or living apart itself that is the most affecting to children, but the emotional impact of changes in their home life – especially during the Christmas period.

Our free service supports parents in working together to create child-centred parenting plans, including agreements on time-sharing arrangements, travel logistics, and involvement of extended family.

Mediation empowers parents to find solutions together, and agreements reached this way are more likely to be respected.”

Flexibility and compromise are key to creating these Christmas plans and navigating the season. If you can’t meet in person on Christmas day, setting up video calls can be a great way to still remain involved in the festivities.

Geraldine also highlights that Christmas is more than just one day, urging parents to consider creative solutions, such as splitting time or celebrating on alternate days. “This can be a chance to create new traditions and lasting memories that are unique to your family’s circumstances,” she adds.

It is equally important to shield children from any disagreements, as even subtle tensions can impact their experience. Treoir advises parents to resolve differences privately and constructively.

“Transitions between parents’ homes should be cheerful and stress-free,” Geraldine advises. “Focusing on building positive memories and fostering an atmosphere of joy will create a holiday season your child will cherish for years to come.”

At Treoir, we understand that shared parenting can be challenging, and the holiday season can sometimes feel overwhelming – so don’t hesitate to reach out for support.

Christmas is a special time for children, so we encourage parents to put your differences aside and focus on your child’s happiness. With collaboration, flexibility, and clear communication, families can share a peaceful and joyful festive season.

From everyone at Treoir, we wish you a happy, stress-free Christmas!
